Bread!

Have you seen the commercials on television promoting high fructose corn syrup? It amazes me that the food industry is now lobbying the public for acceptance of HFCS. Although, from what I have read, the jury is still out on the affects of HFCS on the body (Mayo Clinic , Wikipedia) what is apparent is that too much consumption of sugar does lead to health problems; obesity, type 1 and 2 diabetes ... What is also disturbing to me is the amount of sugar, usually HFCS, that is added to foods that we eat, often times without us knowing about it. I did a quick survey of our groceries and discovered HFCS in our yogurt, bread, ketchup, and mustard. I can understand people's interest in organic diets. It is nice to know exactly what you are putting into your body.
So, after finding out that some of our bread is made with HFCS, I tried to make homemade bread with very little success. I started with wheat bread, which was probably a mistake, since it takes a lot more time than white. The first loaf came out like a rock. I don't think I let it rise long enough in the pan before loading it in the oven. After a few failures, Jennifer and I went and bought a bread machine (see picture). This little thing is amazing. You can not only make bread for sandwhiches, you can use it to prepare dough for pizza, bagels, naan, and all sorts of cool stuff. I am going to try to never buy bread again!
Next I'll try homemade ketchup. I wonder if there is a ketchup machine.

Back to Busch Gardens and Fort Desoto

Eric was back in town this weekend, so we went back to Busch Gardens on Saturday. We did pay for a year long pass and might as well use it.

Sunday afternoon we went over to Fort De Soto in Pinellas County and walked on the trails then out to the boardwalk. We saw a sea gull get hooked by a fishing line and watched the fisherman remove the hook. After walking at the fort, we went to downtown St. Pete and showed Eric where the Sailing Center is.

I went ahead and registered for the Sprint Triathlon at Fort De Soto. It is on April 11. Let the training begin.

Pinellas Trail

Jennifer and I went cycling on the Pinellas Trail this weekend. We started just South of Downtown Dunedin, went up to Honeymoon Island, out onto the Island and back, then North to Palm Harbor. It was an overcast and cool day, and very windy over the causeway.

Unfortunately, my front wheel started to wobble horribly around Palm Harbor, so we had to turn back. I am taking the wheel in this week to get it trued. I will have a picture to follow soon.

Busch Gardens

Eric came into town this weekend. He, Jennifer, and I went to Busch Gardens yesterday. I bought a yearly pass, Eric and Jennifer bought Fun Passes, so that we can go back whenever we want this year. The price difference between the Fun Pass and one day ticket is small.

The park was crowded and we spent most of our time walking around. Jennifer and I did ride the Gwazi, which I believe is the oldest roller coaster in the park, since it is the only wooden coaster. After that, we decided we would no ride any more wooden coasters, since you feel like you just got beat up when you get step off of it.

After the Park, we went with Nate and Sarah to have dinner at the Columbian Restaurant in Ybor City.
